I was absolutely thrilled to be involved in such a heart-warming project to say ‘thank you’ and show our appreciation for all they do”.

“I absolutely love Christmas and thoroughly enjoyed crafting the hampers. Everyone all needs a bit of festive cheer at the moment so it was fantastic to be able to help make Christmas arrive early!”

The winners, who under normal circumstances would normally be brought together by The National Lottery in the run-up to Christmas to help support various charities, adapted their thinking this year by creating a Whatsapp group so they could work from their own homes but share ideas and creations with each other as they made their hampers; Also joining the festive hamper making were some of the biggest region lottery winners, including Patricia and John Gill, from Warrington, who won £1M in 2015 and Sharon and Nigel Mather, from Bowdon in Cheshire, who won an amazing £12M in 2010.

The hampers, after being quarantined appropriately to ensure all required guidelines were adhered to, were delivered to Age Concern Central Lancashire’s Dementia Day Support Centres in Bamber Bridge and Fulwood Preston, aboard a fabulous festive truck.

Months after his jackpot win, Steve still works as a builder – After his win the builder promised not to let his customers down: but for what reason?

The new multi-millionaires told the Mirror newspaper after their win that they would take a couple of weeks holiday but intend to continue working. Thomson called the Jackpot win ‘really overwhelming’, which is very understandable. Steve and his wife Lenka say the money is ‘too much’ for them. The couple want to do a lot of good things with the money and, in his own words, Steve is going to be ‘sensibly generous’, he goes on to say he was ‘on the verge of having a heart attack’ when he realised he had matched all seven numbers after his win!

Mr Steve Thomson and his wife, shopworker Lenka, 41, said they plan to buy a new home so their children 8-year-old daughter & two sons aged 10 and 15 can finally have their own bedrooms. He also said the couple had made no big purchases as yet, just window shopping – although he did admit he went and bought himself a new shirt and had a haircut for when he was presented with the cheque.

A friend and neighbour of the family, Ellie Wood, 42, said: ‘Steve and his wife are salt of the earth. I’m not surprised that Steve is continuing to finish off work he had already on his books – that’s just the type of guy he is. He’d never leave anyone in the lurch’.

‘I’m just a normal guy and I don’t want this to change me. I’m a man of my word and I promised I would complete the work so that’s what I will do.’ While he was working on a customers porch, a neighbour enquired about having a new front door fitted at their home too. ‘Steve was happy enough to take on new work and made an appointment to visit the man’s address,’ an onlooker said.

Didzis Pirags, 36, is a chef who won £1m on an online scratch card. He still turned up to work his shift at a pub on Christmas Day. Despite his huge win, the single father still needed to finish his shifts on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and over the weekend.

Pirags was taking his lunch break at the Hungry Horse Pub in Preston, Lancashire, on Saturday when he bought his winning ticket. He logged into his National Lottery account to use the £6.50 he had left over.

He began to play the Merry Millions Instant Win game in his flat above the pub.

“The first thing I scratched off said £1m.The nanny was there and I said ‘could you look at it, could you look at it please, I can’t believe it, is that £1m?'”

He also had to confirm with his boss because he was still in disbelief.

The winner says the money will allow him to provide the “best possible life” for his five-year-old son. He will be able to spend more time with his son, since he works 60 hours a week.

He hires a nanny to look after his son. Pirags completes regular 12-hour shifts, including at weekends, meaning he can only spend time with his son a couple of evenings a week.

Mr Pirags said he did not spoil his son over Christmas but bought him some headphones as an extra present. He revealed his win on Friday. The winner has bought a four-bedroom house for £280,000 with his money. Furthermore, he plans to buy a new car and give his current car to a friend.

This is supposedly due to its “old-fashioned” upbringing and “superior eating quality”. You could wash it down with the world’s most expensive alcohol – a six-litre bottle of Screaming Eagle Cabernet 1992 has previously been sold for £380,000. End the night with the world’s priciest Christmas pud, soaked in 200-year-old Cognac and topped with a gold coin – for a lovely price of £23,500.

What would Christmas be without a Christmas tree? Especially a £7 million one. This was originally displayed in the Emirates Palace hotel in Abu Dhabi in 2010. The tree itself “only” costs £7,800 but it is decorated with jewellery and 181 diamonds, pearls, emeralds and sapphires, as well as baubles and lights. It currently holds the Guinness World Record for the most expensively decorated tree.

Finally, what about a thoughtful card to friends and family? One special card fetched £20,000 at auction in 2001. Sir Henry Cole posted this card in 1843 to his grandmother. A London illustrator called John Callcott Horsley hand-coloured. The card is one of the 12 remaining from a batch of 1,000 originally lithographed.

Four National Lottery winners from Hull have generously helped make ballroom dancing dreams come true for a Blackpool-based hospice.

Couples’ Jill and Steve Walsh and Paul and Debbie Lawton, along with other lottery winners from across the UK, helped to arrange a festive afternoon. This included tea and ballroom dancing masterclass for more than 200 patients from Trinity Hospice.

With a combined wealth of £115m, the lottery winners helped to transform The Blackpool Tower Ballroom into a festive winter wonderland for the afternoon, serving tea and cakes to guests.

For many of the patients and carers at Trinity Hospice in Blackpool, dancing on the world famous Blackpool Tower floor, which has hosted Strictly Come Dancing, is on their dream wish list.

The Tower’s famous mighty Wurlitzer organ played throughout the afternoon. Guests learned the moves to the traditional Waltz and Rumba. They received help from professional ballroom dancers.

Yvonne Richardson, who receives day care at Trinity Hospice, said, “It has been the most amazing afternoon.

“Being amongst all the dancing on the famous Blackpool Tower Ballroom floor has been better than I could have ever imagined.

A couple from South Gloucestershire, who became UK’s oldest lottery winners, moves into a budget hotel while their modest home is renovated.

They opted to stay in their unassuming three-bedroom home of 57 years, which is being done up.

Britain’s oldest lottery winners say the £18million windfall “hasn’t changed” them and they have gifted or given most of the cash away.

Modest Dennis Banfield, 87, and wife Shirley, 83, hit the jackpot in February, bagging £18,139,352 on a lottery ticket purchased from their local newsagents in the South Gloucestershire village of Winterbourne.

But they opted to stay in their unassuming three-bedroom home of 57 years – which they paid just £2k for in 1961.

The couple, who have been married for 61 years, is spending some of the winnings on having the inside of their “dream” house completely renovated.

The Banfields have been living at a local budget hotel in Bristol, since August 12, where rooms cost just £66 per night.

But they say they are looking forward to returning to their Winterbourne home for a quiet Christmas with their family, including the two daughters they split their winnings with.

The Win Hasn’t Changed Who They Are

Speaking outside the hotel on Wednesday, Shirley said…

“We decided to stay in the house, and just have the whole of the inside of it completely redone.

“We’ve been there for 57 years now. We know the area, the house is not overlooked, it’s got a lovely big driveway.

“We’ve been staying here at the Hilton since August 12. However, we’re near to our house so we’ve gone back to see it as it’s been done up.

“There’s still a bit of a way to go on it, but we’re hoping to move back in within the next fortnight.

“We’ll definitely be back in time for Christmas.”

Earlier this week, a builder outside the couple’s home said…

“They’ve gone to stay at a hotel while we’re working here renovating the place.”

The front garden is currently full of fittings that have been torn out for the renovations.

The Banfields would not comment on what they had treated themselves inside their newly-renovated home. It has a current estimated market value of £316,000.

Giving For Christmas

But the generous couple has given away large sums of their £6million share of the winnings. The winnings have been spread to various charities, including Bristol Children’s Hospital.

Shirley said: “We’ve given a lot of it away in lump sums.

And Dennis, who will be 88 on December 11, added: “It doesn’t mean anything to us, really. It just means a lot to us to know that our daughters are looked after.”

The couple also bought five of the Wallace and Gromit statues that were dotted around Bristol for a month. They were sold at The Grand Appeal auction – with the money going directly to Bristol Children’s Hospital.

They plan to donate one of the statues, a penguin, back to Bristol Children’s Hospital where it was originally displayed. This will be done in a presentation on December 11 – Dennis’ 88th birthday.

The couple added that they are considering giving some of their winnings to the staff at the Hilton hotel. Shirley saying: “We see the staff here almost like family now.”

While some lottery winners quit their jobs and jet off into the sunset, Patricia Aldridge isn’t letting £1million stop her from doing a 12-hour shift at a care home on Christmas Day.

The 55-year-old care assistant and her husband Robert are celebrating becoming millionaires today after scooping the top prize on the Lucky Dip.

But the couple, who live in a £290,000 house in Slough, Berkshire, are keeping their feet firmly on the ground, saying the hefty sum ‘won’t change a thing’.

The mother-of-three will start her 12-hour stint at a Dementia and Alzheimer’s home in the area at 8am on December 25.

The lottery winner said: ‘I really don’t mind working Christmas because I love it.

‘Christmas in the home is a special time for the people there so it is just nice. I’ll be working from eight in the morning until eight at night.

‘It’ll be a normal day of work but they also have a massive Christmas dinner and it is very festive and a really nice day.

‘I’ve already committed to working Christmas Day and could not drop out now and make someone else have to change their Christmas plans.’

The Aldridge family will still be celebrating, but on another day ‘safe in the knowledge, it is going to feel like Christmas more regularly’ in light of their increased bank balance.

And after buying lottery tickets every week for the last 23 years, they are ecstatic to have won.

She added: ‘On actual Christmas day Robert will probably be playing with his new toys too much to miss me.’

One positive the family are drawing from their new-found fortune is breaking the ‘Christmas curse’ they have suffered in the last few years, after losing three relatives in three months.

Mrs Aldridge said: ‘We lost both my parents three months apart just before Christmas a few years ago so it’s been hard to celebrate.

‘Then last year we all decided we’d make an effort again, only to lose my brother to heart failure on Christmas Eve.

‘It’s been so tough but we hope that this win heralds a new and happier season of joy in our family.
