Didzis Pirags, 36, is a chef who won £1m on an online scratch card. He still turned up to work his shift at a pub on Christmas Day. Despite his huge win, the single father still needed to finish his shifts on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and over the weekend.

Pirags was taking his lunch break at the Hungry Horse Pub in Preston, Lancashire, on Saturday when he bought his winning ticket. He logged into his National Lottery account to use the £6.50 he had left over.

He began to play the Merry Millions Instant Win game in his flat above the pub.

“The first thing I scratched off said £1m.The nanny was there and I said ‘could you look at it, could you look at it please, I can’t believe it, is that £1m?'”

He also had to confirm with his boss because he was still in disbelief.

The winner says the money will allow him to provide the “best possible life” for his five-year-old son. He will be able to spend more time with his son, since he works 60 hours a week.

He hires a nanny to look after his son. Pirags completes regular 12-hour shifts, including at weekends, meaning he can only spend time with his son a couple of evenings a week.

Mr Pirags said he did not spoil his son over Christmas but bought him some headphones as an extra present. He revealed his win on Friday. The winner has bought a four-bedroom house for £280,000 with his money. Furthermore, he plans to buy a new car and give his current car to a friend.

National Lottery players are being urged to check their tickets so the winner can claim their prize in time for Christmas. They have until 31 May to make their claim else the ticket will be invalid. The money will then go to help National Lottery-funded projects across the UK.

The ticket-holder can call 0333 234 50 50 if they believe they are the winner.

According to The Sunday Times Rich List, this jackpot would take a single ticket-holder into the same league as footballer Andy Carroll (£19M) and pop star Rita Ora (£18M) combined.

Camelot only revealed the county on which the ticket was bought in case the winner wants to remain anonymous.

Andy Carter, senior winners’ adviser at The National Lottery, said they were “desperate” to find the winner. They want to “reunite them with their winnings” – and that a “specialist team” was in place to help them.

Camelot has the power to pay prizes if tickets are stolen, lost or destroyed. However, they can only do this if the player has submitted a claim in writing within 30 days of the draw. An investigation will follow to determine the validity of their claim.

Take it to the next level – a £403,653 Christmas dinner. One 9kg free-range bird from Copas Traditional Turkeys would set you back a whopping £153. This is supposedly due to its “old-fashioned” upbringing and “superior eating quality”. You could wash it down with the world’s most expensive alcohol – a six-litre bottle of Screaming Eagle Cabernet 1992 has previously been sold for £380,000. End the night with the world’s priciest Christmas pud, soaked in 200-year-old Cognac and topped with a gold coin – for a lovely price of £23,500.

What would Christmas be without a Christmas tree? Especially a £7 million one. This was originally displayed in the Emirates Palace hotel in Abu Dhabi in 2010. The tree itself “only” costs £7,800 but it is decorated with jewellery and 181 diamonds, pearls, emeralds and sapphires, as well as baubles and lights. It currently holds the Guinness World Record for the most expensively decorated tree.

Finally, what about a thoughtful card to friends and family? One special card fetched £20,000 at auction in 2001. Sir Henry Cole posted this card in 1843 to his grandmother. A London illustrator called John Callcott Horsley hand-coloured. The card is one of the 12 remaining from a batch of 1,000 originally lithographed.

A lottery winner from Arizona has missed out on their $14.6m jackpot after failing to show up in time to claim the prize. The winning ticket (£11.1m) was sold in Goodyear, on June 2 2019.

But the winner did not claim the prize before the six month (180 days) limit ran out. Additionally, this is the biggest ever prize to go unclaimed in Arizona. The ticket expired on December 2 at 5pm.

Gregg Edgar, Arizona Lottery Director, said…

“There is nothing more exciting than to award a large jackpot, like this $14.6 million prize, so we are always a little sad when we see one of these prizes expire unclaimed.

“These dollars will be utilised to enhance our player’s experiences with future games and fund a variety of beneficiaries that have tremendous impact for our community.”

The winner of the latest £105m EuroMillions jackpot has been revealed as Steve Thomson, a father-of-three and builder. Apparently, he only checked his ticket because his colleague was running late for a job…

The winning numbers were 08, 10, 15, 30 and 42, and the Lucky Stars digits 04 and 06. The draw on 19 November came on the 25th anniversary of the National Lottery. What a great way to celebrate!

Steve Thomson has won the ninth-biggest winner in the history of the National Lottery. This has secured a life-changing sum of money for his young family from West Sussex.

The 42-year-old and his wife said they are still “gob-smacked” by their prize. They only discovered the win three days after the draw was made.

Thomson said: “I am not sure I even looked at the first two lines…the third one just jumped out and I could instantly tell they all matched.

“I started shaking a lot. I knew it was a really big win but didn’t know what to do.”

Lenka, his wife, was studying in the UK when the couple first met. They have been together for 17 years.

Mr Thomson has already had a few requests from his children. That includes a Tesla for his 10-year-old son and a pink iPhone for his eight-year-old daughter.

Lenka made a request for a Christmas holiday. She initially thought they had won £105,000 (3 zeros off!). Furthermore, she said the money would make their annual trips to Slovakia to visit her family a lot easier.

She added: “Not only can I treat my family and see them more often, but we can also look to have other holidays, perhaps somewhere hot with a beach.”

They plan to give build individual bedrooms for their children. Additionally, they would love to build their own house eventually.

Birmingham, West Midlands (UK) is officially the luckiest place to win a prize over £1,000,000 on the National Lottery.

Romford in Essex came second and Cleveland in the north-east of England came third – one in 922 and one in 952 respectively winning sums over £50,000.
